To test the hypothesis that plants grow faster in green light, a student set up 3 of the same type of plants. She placed the first plant under a green light, the second plant under a regular light bulb, and the third plant under a red light. All of the following are the constants in the above experiment except __________.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Except for the statement that plants can grow faster in green light, it was a hypothesis that did not have an experiment yet (until later), and that statement can change, thus, making it a non-constant.

The non-constant is your variable. Between the trials the only thing that changes (according to the experiment design) is the color of the light. So that's your variable.
