The #1 cost was the death of a whole generation of young men. Unfortunately, it is likely that in addition to the slow and stupid, the courageous and selfless were also the most likely to die in battle, or in the horrible diseases that swept through the ranks of the wounded like a scythe afterward. Who knows what America lost among those young lives cut short? Was there a Steve Jobs, an Einstein, another Lincoln, lying dead at age 19 on the fields of Gettysburg, in the Wilderness, even at Appomattox Court House? We'll never know. Perhaps even the loss of a generation of conscientious leadership was the reason, 20 and 30 years later, the United States succumbed to the pernicious evil of Progressivism, or resegregation and Jim Crow in the South. Maybe if those men had been alive to take their place in middle age, as leaders of their communites, we'd have had no half century of racism in the South, no plague of fascism-lite in the Wilson Era -- perhaps not even the wretched results of the First World War.

For a realistic example, albeit not from the Civil War, consider the case of Henry Moseley, one of the most promising physicists of the early 20th century, cut down at Gallipoli at the age of 27: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Moseley
