may someone help me please, I've attempted it three times and no luck! :( 3(-10z-1)+5=6(-5z+1)-9

OpenStudy (noelgreco):

Distributive property of multiplication over addition. -30z-3+5 on the left - evaluate

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i get 2=-3

OpenStudy (noelgreco):

Well, that can't be right! You have to collect like terms. the 30z is one type of term (has a variable), and the - 3 and 5 are alike because they're just numbers. What is -3 + 5?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2?

OpenStudy (noelgreco):

Good. That's the left side only. Now, the right side. Now try distributing on the right and collecting like terms.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it -3?

OpenStudy (noelgreco):

Well, it's actually -30z - 3. So -30z +2 = -30z -3 Adding 30z to both sides, you get 2=-3. That's not true, so there is no solution. What did the original quetion ask. Solve for x, or what is the solution set?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

solve the equation for the given variable, answer z=??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no wonder you cannot solve this, there is no solution

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wow thank you!!! its to late though i put in zero and i got the wrong answer missed out on points :((
