See picture below. It does not make sense how they are subtracting x from 0.7x and getting 0.3x... how can they reduce it by 0.4??
If its 70% off then you are only paying 30% of the original cost. So let x = original cost, .3x = 180. Solve for x.
wht they are doing is 1x - 0.7x = 0.3x
So my actual problem uses 75% off with the new cost of $130. So would that then be .25x-.75x=130? then solve for x?
If an item is discounted 75% , how much of the original cost are you paying? For example, suppose you uby a pair of shoes costing $100. When you get to the check out, they tell you the great news, you will receive 75% off!!! How much are your shoes going to cost?
I'm still not getting it... Because if I take 1x-0.75x=0.25x
75% of 100 = 25, so you only pay $25 - or 25% of the original cost. If there was no discount you would pay 100% of the original cost . (1x = new amount) If they discount the item 25%, then you pay 75% of the original cost. (0.75x = new amount) If they discount 50% you pay 50% of the original cost. (0.5x = new amount) If they discount 70% you pay 30% of the original cost. (0.3x = new amount) If they discount 75% you pay 25% of the original cost. (0.25x = new amount) So 1x - 0.75x is saying "original cost - 75% of the original cost"
So then \[1x-0.75x=0.25x\] then \[130\div0.25=520\] correct?
Yep!
Thanks
