A rectangular counter 3 feet wide and 5 feet long has a circle cut out of it in order to have a sink installed. The circle has a diameter of 18 inches. What is the approximate area of the remaining countertop surface? Use 3.14 for pi.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this we just take a difference of areas. we know that the counter has an area of 2160inches^2 and the cut out circle's are is pir^2 which is pi(9)^2. so this means the remaining area is just (2160)-(3.14*81)

this comes to 1905.66inches^2 remaining area..... the key here is DIMENSIONAL HOMOGENEITY and the knowledge or area formulas....
