Well, originally the two parties were merged together and called the Democratic-Republican party.

The earliest forms of these parties can be found when the country was initially established and the union between federal government and the state was somewhat shaky.
Essential parties:
Federalists (Democrats) - The federal government should have more power over the state and individual to create a better, balanced, and controlled society. Same as today except with more emphasis on the individual.
Republicans - Believed that more power should be held by the state; federal government should have a minimal lease on the state. Some thing holds true though slightly more emphasis on the separation between man and government, ie more self-rule in a sense.
