Why was the First Crusade more successful than the following seven Crusades? Between the first two Crusades, Muslim nations built up their armies. The Muslim groups were divided, and could not unite for defense. The First Crusade was officially sponsored by the pope, unlike the others. After the first Crusade, European forces had difficulty finding volunteers.
