The question on my homework says " what did the major mean when he said "I am utterly unable to resign myself"? What do you think Hemingway was trying to communicate to the reader when he wrote this scene? " The title is called ' In another country' By Ernest Hemingway

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

okay. im done doing my thing...anyway as i was saying... the quote means that the major was no longer able to give himself up. This is because, he recently suffered the loss of a loved one. He was just newly married and suddenly she died. The major gave himself to his loved one fully. In other words, he gave himself up to his loved one. However, when she died, the major lost a big part of himself, thus he can no longer give himself up to anyone ever. does that help?

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

"i am utterly unable to resign myself" literally means "I absolutely cannot give myself up" by the way
