What happens to mass during radioactive decay and half life?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Energy from Radioactive decay comes from the conversion of mass into energy according to Einstein's equation \[E= mc^2\]Here m = mass defect; this is the mass lost in radioactive decay and converted into energy. Half life is time required for any radioactive material to decay to half the original number of atom.
