Non-destructive measurement by Elitzur and Weideman.
If you like math : read in wikipedia and elsewhere - Coherent States

If you are (God forbid) an Engineer : read and understand the normal modes of photonic fibers. 
Nice (but  challenging) will be Photonic Crystals
