turn 499800 into scientific notation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[4.998 \times 10^{5}\] This moves the decimal point 3 places to the right and then the remaining "2 powers of ten" are put as two zeros at the end.

thank you is it possible for you to just briefly explain it to me because i dont really understand

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hmm...Well, if you don't know about exponentiation then I'll tell you about it firstly...\[x ^{n}\] This means multiply x by itself n-times...so \10^{5}\] means multiply 10 by itself 5 times that is: 10 x 10 x10 x10 x10 which equals 100000...You'll notice that when you multiply any number by \10^{n}\] the number will have n zeros add to its end, and if there is a decimal point, its moved to the right by n zeros until its not there...Example: 2.5 x 100 = 250 ...Here we moved the decimal point one place to the right then we added a zero to the end...hope you understand my kinda messy explanation :)
