i would argue with your professor that in any example where we are making a calculation involving pi that we would at some stage have to substitute  pi equals some value 

say             $A=\pi r^2$         $r=1$
pi = 3 
has a single significant figure
so
$$A=3$$ is correct to one significant figure 


pi=3.14159265359
has twelve sig figs  
$$A=3.14159265359$$is correct to twelve sig figs.
