describe the end behavior of f(x) = –3x^38 + 7x^3 – 12x + 13

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[f(x) \to -\infty, x \to \pm\infty\]

(Remember to look at your largest coefficient before deciding such, and see what it tends to.

i don't understand...

OpenStudy (noelgreco):

The first term (the one of highest power) determines the end behavior of a polynomial. If the power is even, as it is here (38), the right and left end behaviors are the same. (Both + infinity, or both negative infinity) If the coefficient is positive, both ends tend to +infinity, if negative to -infinity. So in this case, both right and left end tend to neg infinity.
