All these languages emerged from Latin when vulgar Latin transformed into new languages (sixth century onwards) in the different areas where the Roman Empire extended. These languages, called 'Romance Languages', include: Portuguese Spanish French Italian Romansh (spoken in Switzerland) Romanian plus lots of other regional languages (Catalan, Sicilian...)
