The easiest way would be to add the vectors, when needed, by triangle law of vector addition. For example for F+C, bring C down to meet the arrow head of F. The net vector of this addition is the vector From F's tail to C's Head.|dw:1346552429564:dw|

Also, when two vectors 1 and 2 point in opposite directions and are added together, the net magnitude = Vector1 - Vector2. As is in the case of A+E.

You can but don't need to, look at your attachment. The vector F is one block to the left from the vertical line, and C is one block long along the right. If vector C acts on vector F, F will be turned towards right by one block. So as a result of F+C, F becomes vertical, and its length remains two blocks.

here we are talking about vectors so remember that direction is also involved, its not simply 2+1, but 2 (along F) + 1 (along C) = the result is the straight line R joining them. Refer to the post above for R.

Imagine the vectors as movements along the four directions NORTH- EAST-SOUTH-WEST. When the movement is in the same direction like in A+C the net is simply 2+1; A+C = 3(East) but when we write F+C the net movement has a change in direction (where F meets C) so the effective movement is 2 units due north; F+C =2 (North). Similarly, A+D =2 (due North east), A+B = 2 (due South east). When the direction changes from right to left we are doubling back on our way so the effective movement is 1 unit due East;A+E =1 (East).
