Could someone address the meaning of 'avant garde'? I've searched the definition, however, I still don't understand. Does it mean political radicalism?

OpenStudy (vincent-lyon.fr):

"Avant-garde" is a French military term usually used in the context of arts to describe a type of artistic works that go beyond the traditions. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avant-garde

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes I agree with Vincent-Lyon, but I would also add "avant garde" means something that is very innovative or completely different and radical from the mainstream. It can refer to art (including fashion, literature, music ) and culture and society. For example you may say something like , Christian Lacroix's fashion style is very avant garde. see http://www.thefreedictionary.com/avant-garde for further information.
