You should always double check you work and tell your parents to double check their work too and maybe you all can come up with the same answers.

when I went to school, my parents could not help me at all in any of my classes due to a language barrier.

you need to do what you can as a student:
go to class, take classnotes, open your book and read your book, do your homework, study, go to tutoring if needed, create a study group, come here and we will help you learn the process of mathematics.  Keep studying, you can never study too much.....

I agree with both above answers! You're so lucky that your parents can guide you in details. I believe your parents are tough to you only because they wish the best for you!
