What are the dangers of extreme forms of nationalism?

Extreme nationalism can be corrupted into something like fascism. It's one thing to love your nation and support it, quite another to have that pride and then use it to beat down or even kill whoever doesn't agree with you or is simply different somehow whether it is because of their religion or even skin color. History is full of nasty examples and is why calling someone 'nationalist' can often be a derogatory term.

Sometimes it can even cloud views on history. There are certain 'nationalists' in Japan, for example, that claim that things weren't as bad in China as the Chinese claim they were during WW2. It flies in the face of reason since there's so much proof that the Japanese army in WW2 committed a lot of atrocities over there, but that's what Japanese nationalists believe.
