Meter, tone, lyrics all have an affect on copyright.  Pride and Prejudice has no copyright.  Pride, Prejudice and Zombies does.  Wizard of Oz has no copyright.  Wicked by Gregory McGuire does.  Anne of Green Gables has no copyright, but Before Green Gables does.  Basically, you can take free use material and make it your own by tweaking and adding your own intellectual property (weather it be plotline or beat) to the item.
