The Hittites made use of iron which gave their weapons and tools a distinct advantage over the bronze age equivalents around them. Iron forged weapons were harder, more durable, and were easy to make, and they held onto this knowledge jealously.

Chariots were also considered the mobile infantry of the day and the Hittites were among the best at using them. Couple that with iron forged weapons and tools, and you have a strong military fighting machine.
