middle school hw this is using integers and aboslute value -|12| plz help me simplify the experssion

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it would be -12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It is -12. Absolute value is getting the farthest length from 0 on the number line, and it can only be positive. Using OOO, you get 12, and the negative is OUTSIDE of it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ya but why is the negitive sign out of the lines like this -|12|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because - sign is outside the absoulte value sign

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thnx guys i think i get it now

OpenStudy (anonymous):

my pleasure

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

|anything| will be positive here are some examples |2| = 2 |32343| = 32343 |-2| = 2 |-234343| = 234343 in your case we have a negative on the outside someexamples of this -|2| = -2 -|-2| = -2 -|12| = -12 -|-12| = -12

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

note: this is the same thing as -1*|12| we know |12| = 12 so we have -1*12 = -12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohh for sure i got it thank you alot
