1. You catch and tag 100 fish from a lake and release them unharmed. Next day you return and catch 100 fish again, but only 20 of them are tagged. Estimate the the number of fish in the lake.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it would be 500

OpenStudy (anonymous):

understood?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks for the answer. Could you please explain to me how yo got it so i can better understand? Thanks again

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well its actually a little complicated to explain but ill try :p

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the fisherman tagged 100 fish and when he came back he only found 20 out of 100 tagged. try and look at it as a ratio therefore we must assume the every time he comes back out of 100 fish caught he will only find 20 tagged

OpenStudy (anonymous):

therefore a ratio of 20:100

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if we multiply this by 5 we'll get 100: 500

OpenStudy (anonymous):

therefore the 100 he initially caught was 1/5th of the population of fish in the lake

OpenStudy (anonymous):

which is why when he came back and caught 100 fish again he should get 20 out of every 100 fish tagged

OpenStudy (anonymous):

get it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i do, thanks very much, your the best =)
