I need to solve 4x^2, x=-7. Do I do 4(-7)^2 or 4*-7^2? The one gives me positive 49 and the other gives me negative 49...

thanks!

The first one.

guys!they are both the same
OpenStudy (anonymous):
negative only is considered as answer if its the case of root. For example if its √49 then the result will be both -7 and 7. i.e. both positive and negative.

multiplication is commutative
OpenStudy (anonymous):
you get my point?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
calculators and computers really need parenthesis
-2^2
first raise 2 to the 2nd power then tack on the - result is
-4
------
(-2)^2
the parenthesis ensure that the whole thing is squared not just the 2 individually but the whole -2
OpenStudy (anonymous):
but what you say -7^2*4 is?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
-7^2*4 calc will go like this
-(7)^2*4
-(49)*4
