What are the characteristics or properties of non-metals and could you describe it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

NON METALS ARE MOSTLY SOLIDS AND GASES AT ROOM TEMPERATURE(EXEPT BROMINE WHICH IS A LIQUID)THEY DO NOT HAVE ANY OF THE PROPERTIES THAT METALS POSSES. SUCH AS MALLAEBLE AND DUCTILE.THEY ALSO HAVE LUSTURE (SHINE).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

they also do not conduct electricity and are brittle

OpenStudy (jfraser):

if you think of the properties that usually come to mind when you see metals like gold, silver, iron, etc etc etc, nonmetals have properties that are almost universally the opposite. Metals are shiny; non-metals are dull. Metals are malleable; non-metals are brittle. Metals conduct electricity and heat; non-metals conduct neither. The list goes on.
