substitute x = 2 and y=4 into the equation if by substituting these values, the equation is true, then it's the solution to the equation

No if x it substituted with two the left side = 0 and if y is substituted with four the corresponding answer is 4=0 which is not true. The answer is you substitute x with 4 and y with 2.
