Which of the following was not a goal of the Crusades? (5 points) A. stopping the spread of Islam to Europe B. conquering land en route to the Holy Land C. modernizing the technology of Europe D. retaking religious shrines in the Holy Land
Huh. I am sort of thinking C- I don't think there was any conscious effort to modernize the technology of Europe, although I believe that was an *effect* of the Crusades. I'm not sure though, so don't just take my word for it!
I agree with ofarrows - (C) makes the most sense out of the choices here. The Crusades were called for a number of reasons which the other choices cover. The European powers hoped to stem the march of Islam into Europe and pave the way to the Holy Land which was now under Muslim control. The Holy Land was also home to a number of shrines related to Christianity, not the least of which was Jerusalem itself. But modernizing the technology of Europe didn't figure into the equation. The total focus was war against the so-called "heretics" and "infidels" that were now in possession of Jesus' birthplace. Sure, there were exchanges of ideas, philosophy, and religious debate, but nothing that revolutionized medieval society above using the horse, sword, bow, and shield to get their point across when it came to war in the name of religion.
