If i fold something three times vertically then once horizontally, how many layers do I have?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

got a piece of paper?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah...I tried it but I'm not sure I'm counting the layers correctly.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Assuming that it doesn't have any previous folds, if it became a number it would become 2^4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what did you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It wouldn't matter if it was horizontal or vertical, just multiply 2 by the number of folds you do

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well....3 folds equals 8 layers...so then I thought that with the horizontal fold, it would be 16 layers because it is a fourth fold.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or you can do it the non annoying non algebraic way and fold a piece of paper and count the layers

OpenStudy (anonymous):

16 is right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wait, ignore my previous message, you multiply 2 by 2 the number of folds you do

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Or pretty much the same thing I said in my first post :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Right....16 is right? completeidiot, did you count the folds in the paper?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol nice going bidoof didnt need to, i know the mathematical way of solving it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It would be 16 as 2^4 is 16

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well yeah but it doesn't matter which way you fold it at all? I thought it would change it...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nope

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Nope, You could fold it diagonally or any way you want, but all you're doing is multiplying the previous layer by 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, thank you both!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No problem :)
