phillip has $100 in the bank and deposits $18 per month. gil has $145 in the bank and deposits $15 per month. for how many months will gil have a larger bank balance than phillip? (please show work! i'd like to know how to solve the problem)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Phillip's balance: 100 + 18m Gil's balance: ....? Can you fill in ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

give me a minute to solve it!(:

OpenStudy (anonymous):

145 + 15m?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Correct :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then i would add the like terms?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Gil have a larger bank balance than phillip: 145 + 15m > 100 + 18m

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so when i added the like terms of m, i gott 33m + 145 > 100. is that still correct so far?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

18m - 15m = 3m

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhh i thought youd have to ADD the like terms but theres a plus in front of the 15 okayyy

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sooo what would the new continued inequality be??? im starting to get confused again..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes i believe.. 3m + 145 > 100

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How about use equal side: 3m + 100 = 145 Can you understand until this part?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can you move 100 to the RIGHT?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im sorry but youre just confusing me.. i know youre trying to help and all... why the heck does 100 need to be moved..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nevermind i think i got it.. m = 15???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You want to find the month m, right:

OpenStudy (anonymous):

find the amount of months, yes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I mean m < 15 So you can plug m = 10, see if if works

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay thank you!!! soooo much!!!! i really appreciate it.(:

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you really really understand?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

my dad's really good at math but he's asleep right now so if i ever get confused again, i can get his help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okie, but keep in mind when you're taking your exam in school, your Dad's not going to be there ;)
