Which of the following describes resistance force? Answer A .force applied to the machine B .force used by the machine C .force lost by the machine D .force applied by the machine to overcome resistance

OpenStudy (anonymous):

resistance is lost as heat n sound usually C

OpenStudy (shane_b):

Resistance force is the force that must be overcome by a machine before it can do work...see Newton's 3rd law. D is the better answer.

OpenStudy (shane_b):

I originally thought A was a better choice but I didn't like the wording: "force applied to the machine" Applied by what? In the case of a bicycle, is that the force applied by the person pedaling, the force of friction on the tires, the normal force? Who knows. In my opinion D's wording is more accurate since the force applied by the machine to overcome the resistance will always equal the resistance force (again: Newton's 3rd law).
