Assume that the set S has 13 elements. How many subsets of S have at most 3 elements?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Nice one. All the sets that have 1, plus all the sets that have 2, plus all the sets that have 3.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Hint: You have 13 elements, and you have 3 slots to assign these 13 elements. The order doesn't matter

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

This is to find the number of sets with 3 items in it. Use the same idea to find the number of sets with 2 items, 1 item and 0 items.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you!! It was 378!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you are 100% correct, nice work

Ooh, I forgot the set containing zero items, good catch, jim!
