I would use the distributive property on both sides first. What will that give you?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-x-10=6x-16?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Perfect! Now move you x's to on side and your constants to the other!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5x=27?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Try again :) If you have 5x from doin -x + 6x on the left. Then the right side would be -16 + 10!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So 5x+6?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well if you move x's to the left side, you get -x+6x = 5x, which you found! But then you have to move your constants to the other side. So you get -16+10 = -6. So 5x=-6. Can you finish?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't understand. What do I do with 5x=-6?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Since you have multiplication on the left side (5 times x), you have to divide both sides by 5 to isolate x, and solve! So 5x/5 = -6/5, therefore x = -6/5 ! :D
