Explain, in complete sentences, how you would use the graphing method to solve the following system of inequalities and what the final solution will look like on the coordinate plane. x + y –6 2x – 3y < 0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I can't quite see the first inequality, can you please write it again? With regards to the method, you would graph each inequality and then shade the region satisfied by both to find the final solution.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh sorry is > with line below

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok, are you able to graph the first one?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well they are not asking me to graph just explain it in words but I dont know how to explain it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok sorry for the wait. So if you just wanted to solve one of the inequalities, say 2x – 3y < 0, can you tell me how you would do that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

fisrt substract 3 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

am not sure :( I always have trouble with this kind of problems

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Not quite, the trick is to plot 2x-3y=0 as a line and then see which region is satisfied by the inequality. The best way to do this is to pick any point on either side of the line and see if the inequality is satisfied there. For this question I don't think that you actually have to solve it, just explain how you would. Basically you will have two graphs of inequalities where you have shaded either side of each line, and to find the solution to both inequalities you would find the area which has been shaded for both of them. Do you understand?
