I'm pretty sure it's the 3rd choice. #4 looks as though it could have been true, at first. But I think skepticism is actually a big motivator of scientific exploration. A skeptic can still be open-minded. Skepticism raises questions. Questions like, "I wonder how this works," and "I wonder if what they say about (so-and-so) is actually true."
