Suppose part of the Diaz family goes into one balloon and other members go into another balloon. Because they are flying at different altitudes and carrying different weights, one balloon travels at 14 miles per hour while the other travels in the same direction at 11 miles per hour. In how many hours will they be 12 miles apart?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

difference in their speeds is 3 mph so how long does it take to travel 12 miles at 3 mph? divide distance by rate to get the time

OpenStudy (anonymous):

could u work the problem step by step for me....so i could see how to set up the equation? Please

OpenStudy (anonymous):

there is no equation, only arithmetic \(14-11=3\) and \(12\div 3=4\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you explain why u subtracted 14-11

OpenStudy (anonymous):

one balloon is going 14 mph, other is going 11 mph so the fast one is going 3 mph faster than the slow one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

one more thing..could you explain why you divided 12 and 3
