I need to know the rules for getting permission to quote a few lines (or one line) of a previously published poem (like from Rilke or Eliot or Gibran) in my self-help book that I have finished writing. I heard you have to get the poet's permission or the author of the book from which the poem was cited. Thanks,

That might be correct, but I believe that it is fine to use the lines so long as you don't claim the work as your own.
