LGBARIDDLE: A man who doesn't want to die is sentenced to two shots in a Russian Roulette. A six-chambered revolver is loaded with two bullets. Then, it will be spun. After spinning, the man will be shot. If the man is still alive, he is given a chance to pick if he wants the revolver to be spun again before pulling the trigger, or just do another shot. What is his best choice?

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

Let's see who can think the simplest again

OpenStudy (anonymous):

spin 1/6< 1/5

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

btw...the bullets are loaded in successive order...if that matters

hartnn (hartnn):

yes, even i think spin because there will be 2 bullets in remaining 5 slots after 1st shot. whereas if u spin, the 2 bullets will be in any 6 slots, so probability wise, he should go for spin.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh two bullets? spin 1/3 <2/5

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

remember: the bullets are loaded in consecutive order...

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

you have to think simpler

hartnn (hartnn):

so do u mean to say he should not spin because even if the next slot has bullet, he'd still be alive coz its only 1 bullet he faced instead of 2 required to get killed ??

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

that's absurd...

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

why would i do that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ah I got ya... the odds of hitting a chamber with one empty chamber after it are 50% spinning again gives you a 33% chance of getting shot. so don't spin.

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

at the start you have a 2/6 probability for a bullet. If it gets fired and it's blank, then the probability that the next chamber will have a bullet is what..?

hartnn (hartnn):

2/5 ?

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

wrong. it's 2/5 if the bullets are scattered. but like i said, they are put in successive order. So the bullets are adjacent to one another. So the probability would be 1/4

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

whereas if you spin you get another 2/6 chance for a bullet

hartnn (hartnn):

actually i didn't get 1/4 part, can u elaborate?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Because there are 4 positions that the 2 bullets can be in if you dont spin, and there are 6 positions if you do spin.

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

^yes that

hero (hero):

I knew it was going to be the multiplication case. I was just trying to clarify what being shot means. Being shot means a bullet actually comes out of the chamber, right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

LOL this made my day: so do u mean to say he should not spin because even if the next slot has bullet, he'd still be alive coz its only 1 bullet he faced instead of 2 required to get killed ??

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

|dw:1347263098675:dw|black dots are loaded

hero (hero):

Does being shot means the trigger being pulled or the bullet coming out of the chamber?

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

being shot means bullet hitting you

hero (hero):

Okay

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

@Skaematik like i said before no

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no what

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

|dw:1347263264048:dw| as you can see, after the first shot, there are only four possible positions for a bullet
