factors of x^2 - 10x - 24

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

hmm.. try breaking the middle term down.. \[\implies x^2 - 12x + 2x - 24\] does that help?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Just factor the equation.. 1) Just think what number multiplied by what number equals -24, but also adds up to -10? 2) Knowing these 2 numbers you will figure out that both the numbers can't be positive so one must be positive and the other negative... or they are both negative.

Once you find out what these 2 numbers are.. you plug em into this... (x +/- ?) ( x +/- ?) then set each one equal to 0 and solve for x to get your factors. And you can check the 2 numbers by using the FOIL method.
