We originally had the one colony, Virginia. People didn't like the rule there, and a lot of people moved to other colonies, continually until the thirteen colonies were formed. Because of Manifest Destiny, the belief that God gave our forefathers the right to inherit the land, they tried hard to obtain more land, starting with the Louisiana Purchase. The Louisiana Purchase basically doubled the amount of land we had before. Then we just kinda got big-headed and took more and more land. Hope I helped!
