Because there are always people calling for civility in public conversation, and saying that people shouldn't be allowed to say outrageous, inflammatory, and insulting things. Don't you have a "speech code" at your school? That's your own personal Alien and Sedition Act.

it is generally much more uncommon to find people supporting genuinely free speech -- where anyone can say anything, no matter how unpleasant, rude, appalling, or provocative.
