A lot of shipbuilding, to compete militarily with the Dutch, Spanish, and later French, plus a strong economy built on artisanal manufacturing (chiefly cloth) and mining, plus a lot of internal strife over conscience (mostly religion), which encouraged the dissatisfied or oppressed to emigrate.
