Between the first generation of Africans that came to the Americas and the descendants that lived largely as slaves in Colonial America prior to the Revolution, how did their unique African cultures evolve and transform into an “African-American” culture? What specific aspects of West African culture continued in “African-American” culture? What specific aspects of West African culture did they lose in the process? While it is difficult for scholars to validate these connections, which elements in “African-American” culture most likely root in West Africa and how do they prove this?
