I want to use a saying I have heard in a paper. I don't know who wrote it or said it. Should I put it in quotations and write author unknown? I don't know how to handle this. thx

If this saying is cultural, you could state where it derrives from. For instance, my French Canadian Memere (grandma) used to say "comme un fou familier" but incorrectly translate "like the devil" to "the devil has it". In which I'd state the background of where the phrase comes from.
