f(x)=2x + 3x^2 + 5x^3 if x=5 then f(x)=710, f '(x)=407, approximation=2035, how do we calculate the approximation

OpenStudy (turingtest):

to calculate the average slope would be [f(a+h)-f(a-h)]/h where h is some small number (the smaller h the better the approximation)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2035 how to calculate it

OpenStudy (turingtest):

so around x=5 you are calculating [f(5+h)-f(5-h)]/h where h is small this is the equivalent to finding a secant line

OpenStudy (turingtest):

what is that approximation of? the value of the function?

OpenStudy (turingtest):

I don't know what they mean by "approximation" so I'm lost
