(8p)-2 How to simplify

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Both share a 2. So: 8p-2 2(4p-1)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So you mean that -2 can be shared by 8?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't quite understand your question. When you have an equation and all terms share a common number or term that they can be divided by, then doing such an action will simplify your equation. Here is another example: 8x+4x+2 All numbers are dividable by 2. 2(4x+2+1). Another example: 8x+8xy Both share a 8x. 8x(1+y).

I wanted to assure that I understood. the example is great thanks again.

You can also get the expanded version or others call it "checking your work." Ex: 8p-2 Simplified: 2(4p-1) Expanded / Checking: Multiple the 4p by 2 and then multiply the -1 by 2. 4p*2 = 8p , -1 * 2 = -2 =8p-2

Great that is what I was looking for to check my answers.

no problem ^^, it's really just the reverse order and if you get the same result as your starting question, then you got it right :).

Okay I was not ignoring you my computer froze. Thank you!
