The force y in pounds needed to stretch a spring x inches beyond its resting point is given by the equation y=2.5x. Determine the amount of force needed to stretch the spring 6 inches beyond its resting point. Please show me step by step how to do this problem?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 2.5 is, I asume the constant of the spring. Therefore, yo uwould need 2.5 N/m * 6 inches ( convert to meters if you can) then you get the amount the weight has to be.

Every single spring has a different constant ( 100 n/m, 3 n/n) etc... Anyway that is the only way I learned about spring in physics up to now.
