Geometry HELP! euler formula for prism/pyramids (polyhedra)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

plz give quick explanation why it works. i get the relationship between base polygon to edges and vertices. but this formula just does not look obvious to me :s

OpenStudy (anonymous):

My notes has : You may have noticed that the sum of the number of faces and vertices minus the number of edges will always equal two. Leonhard Euler, an esteemed 18th-century mathematician, discovered this relationship and put together the following formula, which summarizes the relationship that exists between the faces (F), vertices (V), and edges (E) of any polyhedron that doesn't intersect itself. Euler's Formula F + V - E = 2
