Don't give up. The first few programs are going to be hard because we have no experience. I've went through the beginning of a couple books and I still had to look up what to do as sadly as it seems. The wiki that is on that first assignment walks you through how to do it. Just keep trying. You'll get it. Once you do get it, start over and see if you can do it again and explain outloud what exactly you are doing.

do you understand how the interest works?
when you are stuck, it helps to write down in words what you need to do.

decide when you want to stop; like - balance is between -1 and 0
guess a minimum payment
for each month in a year,
add the interest to the balance and subtract the payment
after 12 months have passed, if the balance is outside the 'stop' criteria
choose a new payment based on the end balance (too much or too little?)
go back to the 'year loop'
