The pilot of a helicopter plans to release a bucket of water on a forest fire. The height y in feet of the water t seconds after its release is modeled by y = -16t2 - 2t + 400. The horizontal distance x in feet between the water and its point of release is modeled by x = 91t. To the nearest foot, at what horizontal distance from the target should the pilot begin releasing the water? ____ ft Use a number only.
OK, I guess you have to put y = 0 for when the water hits the ground. Solve the quadratic for t and sub in to x = 91 t for the answer.....
I need help to solve it I've tried but keep getting the wrong answer.
Hmm......quadratic has a root around 5 but that doesn't look right when you sub in the other. Think I am not understanding this question, the wording is a bit peculiar....
I suppose it could be, 91 * 5 = 455 feet (roughly)
It's around 449 feet (if you want to do it more accurate you will have to do yourself)
That's actually the right answer thanks for your help!
