What is the solution set of |x – 6| = 10? is it 16?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

16 is part of the solution set, but so is -4. -4 - 6 = -10, but since you have absolute value sign, \[\left| -10 \right|=10\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but 10 isn't a answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh, well I meant that you're trying to get 10 as your answer. So when you place the answer 16 or the answer -4 into the absolute value signs, you get 10 which the equation is asking for.

ooh okay , thanks
