Suppose you want to carpet a rectangular room that is 6 feet by 12 feet. Carpet costs $10 per square yard. Note that 1 yard = 3 feet. How much does it cost to carpet the room?

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

first...find the area of the rectangular room...do you know how to do that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

72

OpenStudy (anonymous):

/3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

24

OpenStudy (anonymous):

240x10= 240

OpenStudy (anonymous):

isn that correct?

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

nope

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

firstly... you were right...there are 72 cubic feet <--that is the area

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

to turn that into CUBIC yards...you divide by 9..not 3 so what is 72/9?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

8

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

now multiply by 10

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think square feet not cubic feet @lg

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but why divide by 9

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

i did

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

1 yard = 3 feet but you have square feet..so you square both sides 1 square yard = 9 square feet make sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3 feet = 1 yard 9 square feet=1 square yard

OpenStudy (anonymous):

dammit, i saw the squared after the fact. almost got 100 on a quiz.... next time i suppose. thanks tho

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

welcome
